Walking and cycling
The Journey Planner for Cycling and Walking gives you the best cycling and walking routes from your departure point to your destination within the Helsinki metropolitan area.
Cycling and public transport are a great combination. You can enjoy the good aspects of both of them by using park and ride facilities. If you do not want to cycle all the way e.g. to the center of Helsinki, you can leave your bike at a park and ride parking place and do the rest on public transport.
According to the Development Plan for the Park and Ride Schemes in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, 7,800 new park and ride spaces for bicycles will be created by 2020. That would make the number of park and ride spaces for bicycles up to 14,000. The plan also involves improved shelters or other storage facilities for bicycles, increased number of bicycle racks which permit locking a bicycle by the frame, lockers for cycle helmets and improved traffic arrangements.
Passengers traveling with HSL's tickets can carry bicycles on commuter trains free of charge outside peak hours (Mon-Fri 7am-9am and 3pm-6pm), provided there is space. Bicycles can be carried also on the Metro.
A new, modern city bike system will be introduced in Helsinki in the coming years.
